I’m Morgan Colen and I was first diagnosed with Alopecia Areata at the age of three. I was too young to remember the details of the triggering event. However, my parents researched and took me to every doctor, and finally we accepted the fact that the hair loss was inevitable. We tried a few holistic treatments and my eyebrows, lashes and some hair returned but the hair on my head continues to disappear and reappear randomly. I was afraid to go anywhere without my hat and asked my mom for a wig. She took me to professional wig installers and taught herself how to install and make them to help me adjust if I ever needed it. That is when I entered my first grade pageant and won! I decided to write about it 2 years later because I was finally courageous enough to go bald in public for my 8th birthday photoshoot.
I wanted to show the world that bald girls can be beautiful too and I was proud of this accomplishment and my mom helped me write and publish my first book “Morgan’s Crown”.
My life changed when my mom entered my first bald birthday photoshoot picture in The Bailey Agency’s 2020 Model Search and I was selected as a finalist and later won the Children’s (Girl) segment. That picture was recognized by Creative Soul Photography which featured me as their cover girl for their 2021 Calendar. This opportunity took me out of my comfort zone and really boosted my confidence.
What makes me thrive regardless of Alopecia is the fact that the world is becoming more inclusive and representation matters. Also, I am able to help other little girls feel that they have what it takes inside to win and that they are beautiful with or without hair. I am grateful for a supportive village of family, friends and followers and that I’m able to put a smile on a little girl’s face who has been bullied or is struggling with self esteem because of their appearance.
My message to other warriors is that you are not alone! You are unique! You can win! So, be bold, be fierce and BE-YOU-tiful!
