I’m Mike (@mindfully.mike on instagram) and I have had an amazing, terrifying, confusing, beautiful life! So, my health journey is pretty all over the place, but I’ve had health issues since birth! When I was born, I was misdiagnosed by 11 doctors as having craniosynostosis. It took doctor number 12 to tell my mother “he’s fine, he just has a big, beautiful head.” At the age of 3, my mother noticed I was breaking out in eczema, all over. I had to eliminate diary, and it turns out, that was the cause! Fast forward to my college days, I started to get severe GI pain. Upon going to my first gastroenterologist I was diagnosed with chronic colitis, gastritis and esophagitis. I was annoyed. I wasn’t getting answers, I was just getting labeled. I was put on the AIP diet by a holistic doctor, and discovered a whirlwind of trigger foods and some actual food allergies that flew under the radar because the symptoms weren’t “severe enough.” When I was 19, I was told “you definitely have an autoimmune condiiton, we just cant tell you what it is, we don’t even know!” I was a mystery illness case. I was eating, yet I wasn’t absorbing nutrients or digesting food properly. In 2018, I was then diagnosed with hyperthyroidism- and we still do not know the cause. I battled health issues for two years with no answers, and then one day- I woke up unable to speak clearly. After a month and a half of thinking I had bronchitis, I went to an ENT doctor and discovered that my vocal cord was completely paralyzed. At this time, there were only four options for a diagnosis, a potentially fatal neurological disease, an untreated autoimmune condition, chronic lyme disease or the “C word.” Never in my life would I have ever thought I’d be HOPING to have lyme disease, but, I was- it was the “best of the worst” options I was presented. After months of testing, I was diagnosed with Chronic Active Epstein Barr Virus. I had mono in high school, and never thought it would come back in flares. I was convinced Epstein Barr was a “one and done” ordeal. Nope, not for me. My Chronic Active Epstein Barr in conjunction with hyperthyroidism have led my current doctors to say “you have an autoimmune condition for sure, we just don’t know which one.” So, as you can tell, my doctors have been very comforting or reassuring (sarcasm). My life has always changed with each health struggle, a new food to eliminate, a new doctor to see, yet no answers to be found. I’m self motivated to find the root of these health issues. I live my life to thr fullest and I’m finishing my M.A. in Psychology as I write this. I;m grateful for every health struggle I have had since I have learned from each and every one of them. Although I cannot provide you all with a formal diagnosis, I can tell you all this: KEEP FIGHTING. Your autoimmune condition DOES NOT define you. Regardless of our struggles, we can still live meaningful, abundant lives.

Currently, I am still getting test after test, and I cant wait for the day I discover the true “why” behind all of my mysterious health issues. Once I figure out what the true root of these health struggles are, I can finally develop a treatment plan, and I invite you all to follow along on my instagram, where I talk about it all! Thank you all for listening, I’m grateful for each and every one of you!
